Fire Support Base A-6

Located at YD 11x-59y in Quang Tri province, I Corps. Just north Cam Lo River. This strong point was part of the Strong Point Obstacle System (previously called the "McNamara Line") designed to detect and prevent infiltration across the DMZ by NVA forces. The base at Gio Linh, sometimes referred to as "The Alamo", was constructed under extreme conditions by the Marine 11th Engineer Battalion in April 1967. They cleared a 500 meter-wide oerimeter around the base to offer unobstructed fields of observation and fire. Two full Marine battalions were tied down providing security for the base construction, much to the consternation of senior Marine commanders.
